| THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS JANUARY 29, 2012 My Pastor and I performed an impromptu skit at last Wednesday night's Bible study. The study was about tearing down walls in order to build bridges to reach the lost within our community. Our skit demonstrated how people form opinions and perceptions of those who are on the other side of the tracks. I have been one of 'those' from the other side of the tracks. I lived in a trailer park throughout most of my formative years. During junior high and part of high school, I lived just six blocks from a school that was considered to be among the worst schools in Denver. We were poor growing up, though most of the time I never felt that way, until someone from the 'right' side of the tracks made it very clear just exactly where I was ranked on the socio- economic scale! I had one teacher during those rough years that saw beyond the outward appearance and looked at my heart, realized my potential and came along side of me, helped me, and kept me close to a loving Lord. The story of the Good Samaritan is a perfect example of how our society treats others. If we see those that we consider not like us; we walk to the other side of the street even though we see the need and hear their cry for help. Worse yet, how many times do we walk right past and never notice? There are countless ways to reach out to our community-to show the love, forgiveness and salvation of our Lord Jesus. 2 Corinthians 9:8 “God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.” It is encouraging to know He will give us all we need for His calling and gifts in our lives. They are irrevocable, however many times they just go unused. A thought ~ According to statistics, 1 out of 3 people working today are one or two missed paychecks away from being homeless, or in a soup kitchen line, or hoping for a bed at the shelter before dark. In 2003 my home of 11 years, the home where my children grew up and where we lived as a family, my car and a great deal of my belongings were taken away. Driving down my drive way away from my home with only what could fit on a trailer and in a truck , loss and devastation was all I could feel. I was that person on the other side of the tracks, again and I always would be. But, what a ministry it has become. By Tamara Hunter |
